Studio Minimums & How to Maximize Time

MOST TATTOO STUDIOS HAVE MINIMUMS TO KEEP THINGS EFFICIENT

A way around the studio minimums would be to add some detail and depth to your tattoo, like this tiny rose by Leah.

In today’s world, studio minimums are a reality. Whether it be a time minimum or a price minimum, you’ll likely encounter one of the two unless you go into a scratcher shop (even they usually have some sort of minimum in place). There is a very valid reason these rules are in place. For a tattoo artist, time is most definitely money.

When a studio has a shop minimum, it’s often due to the cost of doing short little 10 min tattoo are a complete loss for the artists and the studio. The cost of materials alone can exceed how much they will get for the tattoo they give. Take into consideration, the average set up cost for an artist at Lucky Bamboo Tattoo is approximately $60 overall. If they do a $50 tattoo, they are at a net loss of $10. This isn’t even taking into consideration of clean up time and materials, and time lost they would have had doing a much bigger project. Even if you tipped your artist that $10, they still gave that tattoo for free.

With that said, there needs to be fairness. This comes in the form of maximizing your time. If you’re paying for an hour, but the tattoo you want will realistically only take 15 minutes, of course you want to get your money’s worth.

There’s 3 real ways to go about this. First, your artist can spend as much time as possible perfecting the tattoo you came in for, slowing down if needed to make a line more precise, or to add shading or color splashes where applicable. Second, get another small tattoo or two in addition to the one you planned on. Often, you artist can help you think of something to compliment your tattoo(s). Third, if you currently have tattoos, have your artist freshen up areas that need a little love.

Those are the 3 most solid ways you can maximize your money for the shop minimums. You deserve to get your money’s worth, and you artist will agree. They want to make sure you’re happy with not only your tattoos, but with your overall experience with them and the studio as a whole.
