Tattoo Etiquette: What You Need To Know Before Your Appointment

Getting a tattoo is an exciting experience, but it also comes with certain etiquette that both clients and artists appreciate. Understanding these guidelines can help ensure a smooth session and a positive outcome. Here are some tips on how to behave and what to expect during your tattoo appointment.

First, arrive on time. Punctuality shows respect for your artist’s schedule and allows ample time for your tattoo. If you’re running late, it’s courteous to call and inform the studio. Once you arrive, be prepared to fill out a consent form and show ID. The health department does require this and our front staff isn’t just having you fill out more paperwork to punish you. Make sure you use your full legal name and double check the form before submitting, if anything is misspelled or incorrect you will have to redo it.

During the session, it’s essential to stay still and relaxed. Movement can affect the quality of the tattoo, so try to maintain a comfortable position. Feel free to bring a pillow, headphones, a blanket or any other comfort item with you to your appointment! If you feel uncomfortable or need a break, don’t hesitate to let your artist know. They’re there to help make the experience as pleasant as possible.

Another important aspect of tattoo etiquette is respecting the artist’s workspace. Keep conversations polite and avoid distractions, such as unnecessary background noise, fidgeting and excessive movement. If you have friends with you, ensure they are also respectful of the environment and the process. Lastly, remember to tip your artist if you’re happy with their work; it’s a great way to show appreciation for their skill and effort.

By following these guidelines, you can create a positive atmosphere during your tattoo session, leading to a successful and enjoyable experience. Embrace the journey of getting inked, and remember to communicate openly with your artist!
