SCRATCHER SHOPS ARE THE BAIN OF THE TATTOO INDUSTRY
First, you may wonder, what is a “scratcher shop”. Simply put, it’s a low quality tattoo shop with unskilled or untrained tattoo ‘artists’ that charge low prices. Low prices may sound like a good thing to you, but when it comes to tattoos, you don’t want to go cheap for multiple reasons.
One of the major reasons is the quality of your tattoo. You’ll likely get a crap design done poorly with low quality materials. Quality inks are very important to the longevity and safety of your tattoo. Cheap inks can’t be guaranteed safe, and are more likely to fade faster. The tattoo will likely have poorly done lines, too thick of lines, scarring due to lack of skill, and so on.
Another reason to avoid scratcher shops is health and sanitation. Since the tattoo industry ridiculously lacks any sort of regulation, scratcher shops can cut quite a few corners in regards to client safety. The Health Department is supposed to oversee these things, but unless someone files a complaint, it’s unlikely the poor conditions of a scratcher shop will be discovered, at least not before they’ve tattooed hundreds of people.
Something else to consider is the likelihood you’ll need a cover up to fix the botched tattoo you got at a scratcher shop. You’ll probably be disappointed in the results of your tattoo, and eventually, you may want to get it covered up or at least reworked. In the end, it will cost you more to do the cover up than it would have been if you got it done right the first time. It’s just a waste of money.
Scratcher shops are a cancer on the industry, and many professional tattoo artists regret that these low quality places even exist. They literally are the #1 cause for most of the negative feelings towards the tattoo world. Bad tattoo ‘artists’ put a stain on REAL tattoo artists.
Don’t waste your money on scratcher shops. In the long run, you will realize you were far better off spending a little more to get exactly what you want in your tattoo desires. You’ll be much happier with the results from a quality studio, will spend less money in the end, and you’ll have an amazing piece of custom art you can show off and be proud of!

It doesn’t matter the style or design, if it’s done well, it’s something you can proudly display and you won’t have to explain to people on why you have a bad tattoo, because you don’t. Avoiding bad tattoo shops is the first step in preventing getting a shoddy tattoo in the first place. Get it done right the first time around and stop wasting money on poorly done, and unsafe tattoos.
